The start of a new week

Today has been a good day in the NICU. Pierce has been doing well and hanging tough. His ventilator has been weaned down and it looks like we are at the next step before he goes off of the vent and onto CPAP (this time the staff will be more prepared). The drs are hoping that Pierce can try out the CPAP later this week.

Also, the cultures that they drew on Friday came back negative meaning that there was no infection in Pierce's bowel (yeah!). It looks like we just had a NEC scare this time. However, the doctor prepared us today that this won't be the last scare with NEC. We are praying though, that we will never have to actually deal with true NEC as it can be very hard to treat. As for now, we are forging ahead. They resumed feedings again today and discontinued the antibiotics.

They were also able to draw off about 1mL of fluid during the spinal tap. Not enough to make much of a difference, but still a little bit. They will continue performing spinal taps every day (as long as P cooperates) throughout this week. Be praying that they will be able to buy some time before consulting with neurosurgery to place a temporary shunt. While Pierce could have one placed now if needed, it's always better to wait until the babies grow bigger and stronger if you have that option.

Please continue praying for full healing of Pierce's entire body. Everyday, Nik and I are bombarded with medical terms left and right. To be honest, it's almost too much to communicate through a blog and I'm sure 99% of you would grow bored in a few seconds. So for now, just now that we are about 1 mile into this 26 mile marathon and while we've cleared so many hurdles, there are many, many more hurdles to clear. We continue to be amazed at the love and support that pours from our community. Know that we are feeling the love and support along the way.

Always trusting in Jesus,
Lindsay, Nik and Pierce

  3. Your clarity and compassion amaze me. :) And I do mean that with love. I know what you mean about being overwhelmed and bombarded with medical jargon! I can personally relate (on a slightly different level). Prayers and positive thoughts continue to flow your way! Find strength in each other (don't ever lose that!) Pierce is an amazingly strong little soul (smile) Wonderful WEEK!!!! Blessings!
