three steps backwards, one step forward, two steps back again

The title of this blog pretty much describes the daily NICU life. Sometimes there are more steps forward, and other times, like today, there are steps backwards. Pierce is having a slightly better day today. The doctors were able to sedate him and hopefully help with any pain med withdrawals. They also discovered that his hemoglobin was low (another common problem with preemies) so they are giving him a blood transfusion today. Because of the blood transfusion, they stopped his feeds for the day, but will likely resume tomorrow at 8mL's every 3 hours.

The biggest concern is still Pierce's lungs. He is still receiving steroids to help with the inflammation and they are hoping that the steroids will kick in over the next day or so and that Pierce's lungs will start to improve (they had tried to wean his steroid dosage over the weekend, which resulted in lots of inflammation).

Please pray for complete healing and that Pierce will progress faster than expected. Pray for Nik and I as we can so often begin to feel overwhelmed and discouraged, especially on days like today and yesterday where we feel like all we are doing is moving backwards in terms of progress.

Tonight we are holding on to the hope that Pierce's life is in Christ's hands and that He has brought Pierce this far and that He will carry him through. Please join us in praying for healing.

Much love,
Lindsay, Nik and Pierce

  3. Our family continues to pray for Pierce. I have a former 26 weeker who is now a 4. He was on the oscillating vent for 6 weeks before going to CPAP and it was definitely a roller coaster. We will continue to pray that God will give you the grace you need for each day.

  5. Praying for you guys everyday. Reading your blogs is like going back to last year for us, with our 24 weeker. The days of excitement when something goes right, the tears and heartache when something goes wrong. What I remember most about those days is the overwhelming presence of God's love and strength, and the understanding that my son first belongs to God and my husband and I are stewards of his care. That thought is what got me through every procedure and every surgery, and every infection and every setback. I know that everyone's experience is different, but God is the same. And He loves your little one even more than you do, if you can imagine that! Some days it will feel like you are holding on by a very thin thread, but keep holding on. Love and prayers!

  6. Praying for Pierce, and all his tiny body parts. It really is amazing how you get to see, almost stitch by stitch, God knitting Pierce's body together, as you said the other day. As a knitter, I love that image. He feels every fiber as it goes through his fingers and deliberately shapes every stitch with his powerful right hand.

I am praying for you & Nik that he will give you the peace of a child on the Father's lap w/ your head on His breast.

    We love you guys!
